Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane
We begin our Passion Experience with Jesus in a garden that faces the pilgrim frenzied city of Jerusalem during Passover, likely just half a mile from the presently closed gate where He will return and reign over the city.
In less than 24 hours, Jesus will be brutally beaten and whipped 39 times, He will be mocked and ridiculed and abandoned by the very disciples who are presently sleeping as He agonizes in prayer. So intense is His grieving that his salty sweat is mingled with blood dripping from his face as he is fully aware of the evil and torturous anguish before him.
Gethsemane means the place of the crushing of olives, which is fitting, for Isaiah says vs.5 “He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings; the punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”
We see Jesus, who is truly God, YET truly man, so that he can take our place! Scripture calls Him the 2nd Adam; he will save us from the rebellion of the 1st Adam in a different Garden where sweat and blood were the result of sins curse. Jesus takes our curse so we can be saved and live with Him in, yet another garden cited in Revelation 22!
As you journey through our Passion Experience we encourage you to spend time at each station of the cross, reflecting on the “WHY?” Why would Jesus, truly God, YET truly man, choose to endure such anguish, pain, humiliation, and ultimately death?
