Jesus, Betrayed by Judas, and Arrested

Luke 22:48 “But Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?’”

The transition from the quiet of the garden to the chaos of the night is jarring.  A large crowd arrives with swords, clubs, torches and lanterns—an angry mob of sinners come to seize the Son of God.

Judas, an apostle who cast out demons and healed the sick in the name of Jesus, who walked with Him and talked with Him throughout His earthly ministry, who sat under the firsthand teaching both in crowds and in the intimacy of home gatherings, betrayed the very man he had pledged to follow.

Judas leans in, his hand grasping the money bag—thirty pieces of silver (the price of a slave), and kisses Jesus to mark him for capture.  A gentle sign of love between friends, twisted to evil purpose by simple greed in the depraved heart of a sinful man.

How often have we "kissed" the Lord with our Sunday prayers, only to betray Him with our Monday choices? Yet, the beauty of this station is that Jesus stays.
