Jesus is Scourged & Crowned with Thorns

Isaiah 53:5 – But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Did the Pharisees forget the prophecies of Isaiah?  Do you forget the price God was willing to pay for His beloved children?

Pontius Pilate, finding Jesus innocent but wanting to satisfy the bloodthirsty crowd, had Jesus scourged by leather whips adorned with sharp bone fragments and pieces of metal. Jesus suffered this horrendous violence at the hands of His creation, and still it did not satisfy the crowd—the fickle mobs, many of whom had a week earlier cried out ‘Hosanna! Hosanna!’ now shrieked ‘Crucify him! Crucify him!’.

Jesus was dressed in regal robes, had a crown of thorns forced onto His head, and was beaten with a pretend scepter, all to mock Him as “King of the Jews”.  Notice the halo of light around Christ’s head—God was using the Romans’ mockery to perfect His image of the Suffering King, sent as a loving sacrifice for the lost. The thorns represent the curse of the fallen earth.

By wearing them as a crown, Jesus is literally taking the "thorns and thistles" of our sin onto His own head to redeem them. Not a powerless victim, but our loving God.
