Jesus is Helped by Simon the Cyrenian
Luke 23:26 – And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.
Simon of Cyrene, an innocent bystander, a passerby coming in from the country, forced to carry the cross of the Messiah. It is a small but surprising detail in the Passion narrative—who was this person? Why does Scripture record this detail?
Did you know that there are no coincidences in life, but only God’s divine appointments?
Just as it was God’s divine providence that Jesus be crucified, so it was God who divinely appointed Simon of Cyrene to be there in that moment. He didn't volunteer; he was compelled. This reflects a deep truth: often, our greatest opportunities to serve Christ come in the form of interruptions we didn't ask for.
As you look at Simon’s face—heavy with the weight and perhaps confused by the moment—ask yourself: How do I respond when a "cross" is thrust upon me? We can add nothing to Jesus’ work but our sin that put Him on the cross.
Simon had to literally carry the cross of Jesus, he struggled under its physical weight, he walked with it behind Jesus.. As you follow Christ, will you carry the cross God gives you to bear?
