Jesus is Crucified

Luke 23:33-34 – 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Crucifixion was the most brutal death the Roman Empire had to offer.  It was a humiliating death reserved for criminals, to broadcast their crimes, which were inscribed above their heads as they hung.

Notice the unique composition of this painting. Above the cross, a radiant triangle with Hebrew letters—the Name of God—shines through the gloom, reminding us that this is not a random tragedy, but a divine appointment. The crucified savior hanging on the cross is surrounded by a cloud of prophets, holding up ancient scrolls which foretold this scene many years prior.

In Luke’s account, we see that even with the nails piercing His hands and feet, His body beaten and bruised, the crown of thorns pushing into His head, Jesus was still our loving Savior. He begged for forgiveness on behalf of His murderers and mockers.

Does the image of the crucified Lord, pierced for our transgressions, stir your heart to the extreme gratitude and worship He deserves?
