Jesus Entrusts Mary and John to Each Other

John 19:26-27 – 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

How can we walk in the example of Christ’s incredible love and service to others, even under the most extreme conditions?

While the Roman soldiers continue to mock Jesus and even divide His belongings amongst themselves, there are four women watching in overwhelming love and despair.

When Jesus saw her, and He saw also John, the beloved disciple. He honored His mother by declaring John to be her son and in this way entrusting her to John’s care.

Even in His terrible state, Jesus was always thinking of others. He redefines family by His blood, and by their shared relationship with Him.  First by begging forgiveness for His executioners, then by offering forgiveness to the repentant thief, and now by looking after His mother’s needs even from the cross.
When you feel abandoned or orphaned by the circumstances of life, remember this scene.
