Why did the soldiers smash the crown of thorns on Jesus head and a purple/scarlet robe on his back?

19:4, 6 Pilate confesses that he found nothing worthy of punishment in Jesus but then flogged Him and crucified him?!!  How many times did Pilate declare Jesus as innocent or nothing worthy of punishment?

Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 19:5, 7. What is significant about this?

Pilate was a vicious tyrant and yet was afraid? Of who? Why? 19:8
